TRIO Upward Bound Program
Sherwin A. Whitaker proudly serves as the Assistant Director of Upward Bound (UB) Program at UIC. He has been a change agent and committed leader in non-profit as well as public and charter education for over 17 years. Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Sherwin attended the University of Iowa where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and learned first-hand the need for TRIO and Upward Bound. Sherwin began serving at-risk youth through directing life-skills mentorship programming for justice-involved youth at Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. After receiving a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree, he went on to successfully execute K-12 educational programming for the Chicago Urban League and direct the first-ever Project Safe Neighborhoods for Chicago Public Schools in Chicago’s most at-risk communities. Passionate about closing the educational achievement gap and opportunity divide, Sherwin later served as an ACT Program Director for the Urban League of Madison and Program Grants Manager for Great Lakes Higher Education in Wisconsin. Sherwin has played an integral role in preparing students for college and advocating for effective resource allocation to colleges committed to serving low-income students. Sherwin is an avid member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and Prince Hall Masons of Illinois. Sherwin enjoys music, sports, debate, writing and public speaking.
